Poster analysis 1

The 1995 film, 'Seven' directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walkers displays the narrative of the film shows two detectives, one being a rookie whereas, the other a veteran, both use their sense of dominance and control to hunt down a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins. The genre of this film is crime thriller as it reflects the two protagonists aiming to solve a crime and capture the serial killer. This film was very successful and was the seventh highest grossing film during the 1990's as it grossed over $327 dollars worldwide. As the film is mainstream film the poster is usually to be shown in public areas for examples, bus stops, shops etc.

This teaser poster doesn't display much information therefore, it does not give too much context to the audience in order to keep them involved. It reflects the purpose of this poster is to promote and advertise the film to a wide variety of different audiences to encourage them to come to view the film. This film poster is significant as it engages the audience due to the black background being to identity the actors who are starred within the film juxtaposed to the white typography. The white typography in the middle reflects the seven deadly sins this draws to the attention of the audience although, if you look closely there is a red line through the words which could reveal something creepy or frightening which may happen within the film. As the colour motif of red signifies blood, danger and threat which normally leads to a death. In contrast to this white signifies a sense of purity and hope therefore, this could link back to the narrative of the film to create hope that the protagonists will capture the antagonist serial killer. Furthermore, the title is represented in red to further signify death although, it is in bold writing to emphasise the film to seek the audiences attention.

The protagonists are framed largely upon the poster and takes up the majority of the poster as they are the main focus in the film. Effectively, to link with the actors are the names of the actors above their image to juxtapose one another. The typography for this is represented as yellow in order to stand out to the audience and draw them in as the film uses popular famous actors. Although, the colour motif of yellow tends to represent positivity and optimism in which this could represent the characters sense of dominance. On the other hand, the use of the slogan 'A nerve - jangling thriller' reveals its an experience that doesn't want to be missed. Also, the use of a slogan manages to manipulate people into watching the film.

It is a visual approach to the audience to reflect aspects of mise - en - scene through the use of low key lighting which is reflected upon the actors faced in the poster to present a warm and mysterious atmosphere therefore, this creates tension and suspense upon the viewers. Also this lighting technique creates a focus upon the characters instead of drifting of to other things that are less important. Although, the poster creates the idea that the lighting on the characters fades out into the black background to allow the typography to stand out.
